The American University of Sharjah (“AUS”) was founded in 1997 by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah, Member of the Supreme Council, and President of AUS. AUS has succeeded in fulfilling His Highness’ vision for an American-style institution of higher education thoroughly grounded in Arab and Gulf culture. AUS has nearly 6,000 students in 26 majors at the undergraduate level and 13 master’s programs. AUS employs approximately 400 faculty and 500 staff and administrators.
A key component of the success of the institution over its first 20 years has been its campus. The campus is 128 hectares. In addition to the 15 academic buildings, the campus of AUS is a sizable residential community. AUS is home to almost 4,000 people, with over 2,000 students in dormitories and over 1,500 faculty, staff, and their families in AUS-provided housing. Approximately 4,000 students commute to campus every week and approximately 500 staff commute to campus every day.
