The Agnes Scott Green Team is a group of dedicated faculty, staff, and student volunteers who work to cultivate a culture of sustainability on campus. With a particular focus on faculty and staff, the Green Team makes sustainable behavior easier through the encouragement of environmentally conscious event planning, special Community Day service projects, and more sustainable college policies. They also push for sustainable initiatives beyond their usual scope, supporting the installation of campus-wide bottle-fill station to reduce plastic bottle use, and encouraging the introduction Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). As recognition of their influence on campus, the Green Team was awarded Agnes Scott’s Breaking Down Silos award in 2016.
A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:
Any member of the Agnes Scott Community is eligible to join the Green Team, with the majority of its members being staff, with 60 current members. Green Team members are asked to make presentations about current Green Team initiatives at division and/or staff meetings. For this reason, each fall the Green Team co-chairs will do some targeted asking of staff to join the Green Team so we can ensure 100% of our staff are being represented.
A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
The Center for Sustainability always has at least one staff member present at each Green Team meeting. The initiatives of the Green Team are based on both the needs of the Center but also the interests and concerns of the group. At each meeting, the Center provides any training or information needed for the group to be well versed on these interests.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):
The Green Team was the impetus for all the sustainability efforts before the creation of a formal sustainability office. They were, at first, a passionate group of interested individuals who instituted the college’s first successful recycling program, supported the first group of Environmental Residents and helped create the sustainability office. Presently, the Center for Sustainability provides the staff and financial support needed to execute programming and outreach campaigns designed by the Green Team.
