A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:

1. A cistern on the roof of the School of International Service (SIS) collects water for flushing toilets within the building.
2. Two bioretention ponds at SIS collect and slow stormwater runoff on either side of the building before filtering it and ultimately allowing excess water to enter the stormwater system through a Bay Saver.
3. The university currently has six green roofs. Two more are being installed in March 2011.
4. A rain garden in front of the Kogod Building captures run-off rain water and uses a Bay Saver
5. Pervious pavement is installed in a test area on the main campus near Kay Spiritual Center.
6. Curb cutting is being explored in order to reroute stormwater into landscape.

American University has six green roofs: The Media Production Center, two on the School of International Service, two on the Kogod School of Business and one on the Katzen Arts Center parking structure and part of the building. Two more are scheduled for the Ward Circle Building and the Mary Graydon Center.
