Beginning in 2015, Austin College began annually submitting its Sneed Prairie restoration experiment and field trip project to the Texas Environmental Excellence Awards (organized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, a state government organization) under the Education category. Our Sneed Prairie site primarily functions as a combination of two things: a prairie restoration experiment designed by faculty in which the data gathering and a significant part of the restoration work is done by students, and also a field trip site for local elementary students (primarily 4th and 5th graders). The field trips are led by Austin College students, and the program and materials are designed to fit under state curriculum standards. Austin College has yet to win an award, but we were a finalist in 2017.
