PAE-20: Inter-Campus Collaboration on Sustainability

1) The Assistant Director of Grounds, Bldg & Sustainability,
Facilities Mgt & Planning and Director of Sustainability led a session at NECSC in 2010 entitled "Accelerating Sustainability Through Strategic Planning & Implementation". Their presentation focused on Babson College as an example of how comprehensive and thoughtful goals, and sustainability planning and implementation, carried out over a number of years can meet the needs of both passionate students and cost conscious CFOs.

2) “Be the Change” Forum on Innovations in Personal and Social Responsibility 2009 and 2010
Babson College and AAC&U (Association of American Colleges & Universities) cohosted a Core Commitments student forum on campus April 3-5, 2009, to highlight how students can be catalysts in educating for personal and social responsibility. The forum, entitled Be the Change, is part of Babson’s participation in AAC&U’s Core Commitments initiative. Students from the twenty-three campuses in the Core Commitments Leadership Consortium shared ideas on how to educate peers for personal and social responsibility. The strongest models presented were selected by a panel of judges for development by student teams over the course of the weekend, and the winning idea was given a grant of up to $5,000 for implementation and evaluation. www.btcforum.com/

3) Babson College sponsored, provided logistical support, presented at the Sustainable Wellesley Symposium on October 9, 2010. Babson's talk focused on how Babson's recent and plans for future GHG reductions contribute to and align with the Town of Wellesley's "Sustainable Energy Plan".

Tri-campus effort called Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship, Arts, and Sciences: IDEAS for Environment and Sustainability with local schools Wellesley College and Olin College of Engineering began in 2009.

A certificate program, which will focus on environmental studies, is planned to start in 2011 and will be available to students on any of the three campuses and will be undertaken alongside any degree program. Students can choose among a common set of courses that will emphasize a liberal arts (science, social science and humanities) understanding of environmental issues, the role of business and entrepreneurship in solving environmental problems, and an appreciation of how the practice and process of engineering and design can contribute as well.

These courses will be augmented by a “core course” that will focus on how to integrate insight from across the disciplines to solve problems. It is designed to challenge and enable students to bring together different types of knowledge and to synthesize new perspectives and understanding.
