A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

Avoiding Culture Shock in the Workplace: In today’s multicultural world, assuming sameness among others can threaten both personal and professional relationships. In this workshop we will explore (1) the meaning of culture and the different pieces of the cultural puzzle; (2) communication techniques to avoid misinterpretation and misunderstanding; and (3) differences in behavior, thinking patterns and concepts of reality among cross-cultural groups.
Adopting a Change Culture: The world is changing fast! To keep pace and take advantage of that pace we must become more flexible, agile, and adaptable. In this session we will explore what being a culture of change means (whether for your team of five or the university as a whole), and more importantly, how you as a leader can create and maintain that type of culture.
Going International: The Ball State University student population includes approximately 625 international students from 90 countries. Since the university’s goal is to double the number of international students, BSU employees must know how to make their association with these students a rewarding experience for both parties. The workshop will feature first-hand examples of how to successfully interact with our international students. The presenter will share his extensive experience with international students and provide practical tips for rewarding encounters. Understanding Multigenerational Differences: Are you a Baby Boomer? Gen X? Millennial? Believe it or not, there may be up to four different generations currently working in your department and generational differences can sometimes create barriers or misunderstandings in the workplace. In the session you will learn about characteristics of each of these generations and how you can work more productively with those of other generations.
Hiring International Employees 101: Ball State appreciates the benefits provided by international professionals. They enhance Ball State’s academic and cultural credentials and make a significant contribution to our vibrant community. However, the process can be challenging. Once the job offer has been accepted, the international employee must have the correct visa status in order to begin employment. This session will explain the various options and the processes involved in getting the visa.
