A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

Bard has been innovative in being an early adopter of renewable energy technologies in our building construction practices, particularly through the extensive use of geothermal heating and cooling systems as well as solar thermal system monitoring technology. All new construction at Bard scopes the use of geothermal technology, and it has been put in place in all but one construction project since its introduction in the mid 1990's. Geothermal heating and cooling provides energy to 40% of the total building square feet of the college. The college installed solar thermal panels on two residential buildings. The innovation relates to the enhanced monitoring and verification on one of the systems. The data generated out of this process will allow a comprehensive look as to how solar thermal technologies work in this region of the country. The enhanced solar thermal monitoring system provides extensive data at 10-minute intervals for two years and will be used in the classroom for faculty research.
