Number of employees served (i.e. directly targeted) by the program (headcount):

A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:

The Green Office Certification program educates members of a Green Team about the various ways to increase sustainable practices in the office. Categories such as Energy and Water, Waste Diversion, Green Meetings & Events, Sustainable Purchasing and Transportation are reviewed with the Green Team by staff from the Office of Sustainability. The team determines which practices they can adopt for their office and then educates their co-workers about these new practices along with training and ongoing reinforcement thru staff meetings and updates to their new employee training manuals with the information.

A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:

The Office of Sustainability (OS) works with office leadership to recruit a volunteer Green Team. OS then works directly with this team to review the certification requirements and educates them about the "why's" behind the recommended behaviors and practices. Typically these volunteers share a strong interest in sustainability and are eager to implement and share what they have learned.

A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

As mentioned above, the review of the certification behaviors and practices serve as the training. The OS team educates the Green Team on the various programs and services available on campus (recycling bins, signage, alternative transportation options, event bins, composting ambassadors & supplies, how to order "green" office supplies from campus approved vendor, how to establish a free office exchange). Reviewing the criteria as well as educating them about how to accomplish the criteria serve as the training. The process typically takes 4 structured trainings with OS staff to complete the entire certification effort with the Green Team, and they, in turn, educate their co-workers thru staff meetings and new employee orientations and manuals.

A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):

Paid faculty/staff are granted time to attend the certification meetings and training during work hours. The certification criteria recommends increasing budgets to purchase Fair Trade/Local and Recycled products which can cost more than another product in the same category. Bin acqusition to increase recycling and supplying reusable cups for office employees are also recommended; however, it is up to each office how much they participate in the financial support for these initiatives. Berea College (apart from this program) provides every new employee with a reusable lunch container.
