A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:

All building projects are subjected to USGBC LEED certification standards. Specific examples include the recent construction of the Jonas Parking Lot and the Student Union and Crow Peak Residence Hall, which created 5 bioswale areas. The construction of the landscape around Crow Peak Hall focused largely on runoff control by refurbishing the main storm water canal that travels through campus. Similarly, the new campus landscaping at the former location of Pangburn Hall enclosed an existing irrigation line, greatly reducing water contamination from debris.

Black Hills State University is located on a northern facing, sloped aspect, that at times is required to drain large amounts of storm water. A major goal of all new construction is the ability to slow and divert this storm water. Much of this runoff is in turn captured and diverted to large bioswales. This prevents both erosion and sedimentary pollution of Spearfish Creek, located downhill from campus.
