Has the institution advocated for federal, state, and/or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

Since 2007, students have had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the Power Shift Conference. The conference is hosted by the Energy Action Coalition, a consortium of young leaders advocating policy to address climate change. In April 2011 students were sponsored by the Undergraduate Department of Geography and Environment to participate in conference programming which included community leadership training, panels, workshops, independent film festivals and congressional lobbying.

Over 12,000 young activists attended the conference in 2009 and 6,000 of those people participated in lobbying efforts where each congressional district was represented by at least one constituent. Students had the opportunity to speak to their representatives about local and federal climate and energy policies. The conference also provides valuable networking opportunities between BU students and others within the Boston Area.

BU’s Urban Metabolism project is providing a quantitative basis for which policy can be formulated to improve Boston’s Carbon Footprint and overall sustainability of resource use. For example, research will allow for policy makers to quantify ecosystem services offered by urban vegetation, and to assess implications of tree-planting programs like Grow Boston Greener.
