Bow Valley College has only conducted one previous sustainability research project (with another underway). The previous project was internal applied research conducted by Trevor McIvor, Instructor in the Chiu School of Business.
The research project that is currently underway is being conducted by Amy Spark (Sustainability Coordinator, Facilities & Ancillary Services), Trevor McIvor (Instructor, Chiu School of Business), and Dr. Aggie Legaspi (Applied Research & Evaluation Lead, Academic Innovation & Applied Research)
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory (including the types of faculty and staff included as researchers):
Trevor reviewed the entire Business School curriculum, and determined that as a college-wide outcome, environmental sustainability within course syllabi is underutilized as a percentage of the ten college-wide outcomes assigned to specific learning outcomes. For example, in core courses within the Business Administration diploma program, sustainability is linked with specific learning outcomes 10% of the time, as compared with Thinking Skills (91%) and Communications (61%). The outcome of this research inspired the next stage of our internal applied research, which involves a Sustainability Literacy Assessment of the student body and a research project entitled 'Cultivating Sustainability Literacy in the Classroom' (currently underway).
