6.04 Hectares

Figures required to calculate the total area of managed grounds:
Area (double-counting is not allowed)
Area managed in accordance with an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program that uses a four-tiered approach 0 Hectares
Area managed in accordance with an organic land care standard or sustainable landscape management program that has eliminated the use of inorganic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicides in favor of ecologically preferable materials 0 Hectares
Area managed using conventional landscape management practices (which may include some IPM principles or techniques) 0.14 Hectares
Total area of managed grounds 0.35 Hectares

A brief description of any land excluded from the area of managed grounds (e.g. the footprint of buildings and impervious surfaces, experimental agricultural land, areas that are not regularly managed or maintained):

Bow Valley College is located in downtown Calgary with very little managed grounds. The only land not covered by buildings or parking lots include a small (15 000 square foot) space outside of West campus.

A brief description of the institution's approach to plant stewardship:

Bow Valley College has an award-winning green roof. Our contractor, Flynn Canada, received the 2015 Roofing Canada Award through the Canadian Roofing Contractors Association (CRCA) for their green roof installation and maintenance. Flynn Canada installed 200 squares of vegetated roofing, composed of 4000 plant seedlings of various grasses to produce an environment similar to native prairie meadow environments. These plants were chosen to survive in Calgary's extremely volatile weather and temperature variations. This roof is accessible to staff, students, and faculty, and acts as a public interaction space.

A brief description of the institution's approach to hydrology and water use:

The plants on our green roof are watered on a timer. However, this watering system does not turn on if it is raining, due to the presence of water sensors. All plants are drought-resistant and resilient to Calgary's specific weather fluctuations.

A brief description of the institution's approach to materials management and waste minimization (e.g. composting and/or mulching on-site waste):

All food waste is taken offsite to the municipal composting facility.

A brief description of the institution's approach to energy-efficient landscape design:

Other than the 200 vegetated squares on the roof of South campus, there are also 15 LEED reflective and balance concrete paving stones to reduce heat islands.

A brief description of other sustainable landscape management practices employed by the institution (e.g. use of environmentally preferable landscaping materials, initiatives to reduce the impacts of ice and snow removal, wildfire prevention):
