A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

The Brandeis University Sustainable Energy Program combines two key challenges – comprehensive deferred maintenance and energy efficiency program into a single holistic program that results in a significant investment in campus renewal while maximizing the financial return, reducing disruptions to the campus environment and engages the community. Working with Waltham based sustainability services provider GreenerU, the Brandeis University Facilities Group combined two unfunded programs, with the result of additional financial savings, utility incentives from their utility partner NSTAR and energy efficiency with approval of a $5M investment in phase 1, and preliminary approval of up to $20M additional investment in subsequent phases.

The program is designed to keep Brandeis on target with regard to its ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals while doing so in a way that aligns closely with other University priorities. One of the keys to accomplishing this has been to identify system and equipment renewal needs that could be partially funded by energy savings they generate. Phase One runs from February 2012 through June 2013 and in addition to significant infrastructure upgrades, includes a heavy component of behavior change and engagement with building users, as well as coordination, commissioning and training for building operators.
