A brief description of the institution’s employee community service initiatives:

Staff Forum, the non-supervisory staff affinity group, awards Outstanding Staff Member and Outstanding Department awards annually.

At an annual awards ceremony featuring a welcome by President Mitchell and an address from speaker from a community organization, the Center for Community Engagement and Career Education gives awards for Outstanding Community Service to one faculty member and one student from each of the four schools at CSUB, for a total of eight awards.

At the celebration of University Day that kicks off the beginning of the academic year, the President recognizes one member of the faculty with the Faculty Leadership and Service Award. This award was established in 1996/1997 in order to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions to the principle and practice of shared governance and service to the community. It honors outstanding service on an equal level with awards for excellence in faculty scholarship and teaching.

The Department of Athletics also recognizes students for their outstanding service to the community with the CSUB Athletics Community Service Award, given annually to an athletic team that has made a significant impact in the Bakersfield Community, at the “Rowdies” athletic awards celebration. (Rowdy is the Road Runners’ mascot.)

The annual John Brock Community Service Awards Dinner, sponsored since 1988 by the School of Business and Public Administration and a local developer, recognizes three students each year for outstanding community service and leadership with the John Brock Endowment Scholarships. A member of the Bakersfield community is also recognized with the John Brock Community Service Award.

At an annual awards banquet organized by the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership, student clubs and organizations are recognized for their community engagement and service through awards in two categories: Outstanding Community Service and Outstanding Educational Program
