The CSUB Edible Garden is a learning community within the General Education curriculum. The themes-based GE embeds sustainability into its inter-disciplinary curriculum. which every CSUB student takes, regardless of major. The GE themes are: Q - Quality of Life; R - Revolutionary Ideas and Innovations; and S - Sustainability and Justice. Each theme must have a learning community. The edible garden fits into each of the three themes.
The CSUB Edible Garden has received the service of about 200 student, staff, faculty, and community volunteers and has had hundreds more provide contact information to volunteer with the garden.

The development of the edible garden has engaged students in the Environmental Resource Management program, the MBA program, and the engineering program.
ERM assisted in conducted the walk-through interactive charrette for the garden.

As a senior capstone project with Prof. Yiannis Ampatzidis, agricultural engineering students have developed an automated watering control system that can be operated from a cell phone.
