A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The university regularly engages with our legislative delegations and the community at-large on a variety of issues, including those pertaining to sustainability and energy conservation. Within the last three years, the campus has been involved in the following activities:

2013: Federal agency meetings: U.S. Department of Energy (Better Buildings Alliance) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Office of Sustainable Communities);

2014: Co-sponsored with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics a “Symposium on the Impact of Oil Extraction in North Orange County”; The Symposium was held in partnership with north Orange County cities (Brea, Fullerton, La Habra, La Habra Heights, Placentia and Yorba Linda); more than 600 community members, neighbors, students and faculty members attended to learn about the nature, scope and impact of local oil extraction operations;

Our Future Now: Sustainability Showcase was first held on May 24th at Cal State Fullerton. The event was organized by: California Center for 21st Century Education (the California chapter of Partnership for 21st Century Education), Cal State Fullerton, Anaheim Union High School District, Orange County United Way, The Ocean Institute, Discovery Science Center, and the Orange County Department of Education. 48 students from 18 elementary, junior high and high school students participated. Each student showcased solutions for global issues affecting local communities or their countries of origin in a Tedx Talk format.
2015: Participated as a member institution in the Orange County Business Council’s legislative advocacy meetings in Sacramento; agenda included promotion of sustainable energy policies;
2nd Annual Our Future Now: Sustainability Showcase to be held April 25th on campus.

Federal and state advocacy efforts must be coordinated and consistent with positions taken by the CSU Board of Trustees (BOT). As such, unless the BOT takes a position, we do not engage in advocacy efforts to support legislation at the local, state or federal level.
