CSULB follows the state required storm-water management strategies. These strategies include Public Education and Outreach, construction site runoff programs, total maximum daily loads (TMDL) requirements, program management elements, illicit discharge detection and elimination, pollution prevention and good housekeeping, landscape design and maintenance, and a post construction storm water management program (LID). Some examples of LID infrastructure include the campus' extensive urban forest and tree canopy made up of more than 7000 trees and the permeable pavement that was installed in 2016 in one of the parking lots.

CSULB is following the requirements of the National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems (NPDES) permit that became effective in 2013. Under this permit, which is administered by the Los Angeles County Regional Water Quality Control Board, the University is implementing Best Management Practices in order to minimize stormwater runoff.
In addition, CSULB has a 5-year Stormwater Pollution Prevention Implementation Plan. Currently, in year 3, this plan allows for best management practices.
