A brief description of when and why the workplace health and safety baseline was adopted:
Cal State LA has been thoroughly tracking, documenting and measuring its injury/illness performance from 2003 to present (2016) with peer data from the other 23 CSU campuses. The performance of the University has been on average the best from 2007-2015 within the entire CSU System. Cal State LA retains the lowest Total Case Incident Rate (TCIR) amongst all of the CSU campuses averaged for these nine (9) years. The University sustains some of the lowest injury/illness yearly rates year after year. For this specific reporting the University went back two (2) years to 2013 as a baseline year, but much more data exists to demonstrate the exemplary performance achieved by Cal State LA in regard to maintaining a safe and healthful working environment.
A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives:
The University sustains a robust safety and health program starting with a focused awareness effort through campus-wide training and orientations. The University trains well above 2,000 personnel annually equating to 3,000 training hours in the various class sessions it conducts. The University maintains a collaborative safety committee comprised of operational units and represented unions that meets on a monthly basis. Minutes and documentation are maintained for these meetings, which is chaired by the Director for RM/EHS. Statistics on cause and occurrence are maintained to focus efforts on the most meaningful exposures to the campus community, and resources are afforded to improve the overall campus infrastructure in support of a safe and healthful working environment. Several employee focused initiatives have been implemented to further strengthen the core principles of employee safety and health awareness and understanding.
