A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (1st program):

The Sustainable Hospitality Management major provides students with a broad foundation in hospitality, sustainability, leadership and management, operations, marketing, and information technology. The major provides students with local, regional, and global perspectives on current and pressing sustainability issues and problems within the hospitality industry. The central core of the program focuses on the concept of "sustainability plus," going beyond sustainability to address issues in terms of the five-dimensioned lens of People, Ethics, Equity, Planet, and Profit. Students can focus in sustainable hotel, resort, and event management or sustainable ecotourism management. Students gain hands-on knowledge and skills needed to pursue careers in hospitality, including hotels, restaurants, resorts, festivals and events, ecotourism, attractions, and eco-recreation with a focus on "green" jobs in business and industry.

The Environmental Studies major provides students with a broad foundation in the environmental sciences, social sciences, environmental economics and policy, environmental history and communication. It also provides students with local, regional and global perspectives on current environmental issues and problems. Graduates are able to think broadly on local, regional and global levels, understand and synthesize information from multiple disciplines and perspectives, communicate effectively and ethically, and to use their knowledge and skills to promote sustainable, equitable and healthy human and non-human communities.

The Environmental Science, Technology & Policy (ESTP) program offers an innovative interdisciplinary B.S. degree program linking natural science, physical science, technology, economics, and policy. The program emphasizes the critical thinking and technical skills necessary to develop workable solutions to complex environmental problems. Unique in its commitment to linking earth systems science to environmental economics and social policy, ESTP provides students with active learning and applied research in marine, coastal, and watershed systems.

The Environmental Studies minor encourages non-majors to pursue their interests in the environment, environmental education and sustainability. It formally recognizes that this program has an obligation to provide high quality educational opportunities to all CSUMB students who want a deeper understanding of sustainability in order to make informed contributions to their community on environmental issues. The Environmental Studies minor provides you with an opportunity to explore your particular interests in the social dimensions of environmental issues and environmental problem solving. Virtually all human activities have environmental impacts, both positive and negative. The Environmental Studies minor provides you with the ability to use the disciplinary knowledge and skills of your major to promote sustainabilty-focused values and practices.

Science for Sustainable Communities Concentration

A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate (2nd program):

The Environmental Science for Sustainable Communities concentration prepares students for a wide diversity of growing “green jobs” working on sustainability issues of interest to governmental agencies, non-governmental agencies, industry, and business. This concentration provides students with an environmental perspective through lower division courses that emphasize environmental science and the ways in which human culture and economic development impact and are impacted by the environment on local to global scales. In the upper division, students apply basic environmental knowledge and skills gained in the lower division in specific career-focused contexts including resource management, environmental policy, social studies, communication, and non-profit management.
