A brief description of the institution’s indoor air quality program(s) (including information about regular auditing or monitoring, mechanisms for occupants to register complaints, and action plans):

Camosun College adheres to the federal and provincial IAQ regulations. IAQ-related regulations for workplaces under Canadian federal jurisdiction came into effect on October 11th, 2000. An amendment to the Canadian Occupational Safety and Health regulations is actually titled "Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems". This regulation includes requirements for Operation, Inspection, Testing, Cleaning and Maintenance of HVAC systems, and IAQ investigation procedures. Provincial IAQ regulations came into effect for workplaces in British Columbia in April 1998, as part of Worksafe B.C's Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. Camosun Facilities Services maintains the IAQ program (mechanism for occupants to register complaints action plans, air quality testing and/or corrective measures in response etc.)

Due to recent and ongoing upgrades, the Fisher Building at Camosun’s Lansdowne Campus will be nominated for a 2015 NAFA Clean Air Award. The purpose of the Clean Air Award is to recognize leadership and excellence in air filtration by selected air filter users. Some of the upgrades include replacing the filters on the Fisher Building with Puro-G13een filters which maintains MERV 13 Performance in a full ASHRAE 52.2-2007 as required by LEED, replacing old gaskets, implementing a filter change record as well as cleaning coils. Camosun will know if it received the award in fall of 2015.

Camosun College has recently developed ‘Scent Free’ guidelines, recognizing that scented products may negatively impact an individual’s quality of life or health. In an effort to minimize the potential negative effects to individuals from exposures to perfumes, scents and other odours, Camosun has created a guideline to increase awareness within Camosun of the potential impact scents may have on an individual’s health and wellbeing; encourage voluntary cooperation in reducing the use of scented products and inform and empower individuals on how to address scent-related issues.
