A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage student research in sustainability:
The Carnegie Mellon Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research encourages student sustainability research through a variety of programs, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Undergraduate research is supported through advertisement of research funding available from the Carnegie Mellon undergraduate research office (http://www.cmu.edu/uro/), through engagement of undergraduate students in the work of the Green Practices Committee (http://www.cmu.edu/greenpractices/), and through support of student projects such as Solar Decathlon through the SEED grant program.
Graduate research is supported by the Steinbrenner Institute graduate fellowship program which provides support for 3-4 PhD students each year, by coordination of the Teresa Heinz Environmental Scholars program which provides support for 1-3 PhD students each year, by special fellowship programs such as the U.S. Environmental Sustainability Fellowships (http://www.cmu.edu/steinbrenner/Initiatives/phdfellowships.html), and by holding an annual environmental research poster session.

A brief description of the institution’s program(s) to encourage faculty research in sustainability:
The Steinbrenner Institute promotes and institutes the development of interdisciplinary environmental sustainability research programs through collaborative proposals. In 2010, the Steinbrenner Insitute led the effort to develop a proposal for a group of PhD fellowships in the area of U.S. Environmental Sustainability. This successful proposal was developed by faculty affiliated with three different departments at Carnegie Mellon.
The Steinbrenner Institute also has a SEED grant program to support proposal development, workshops, and equipment acquisition or other support for environmental sustainability research efforts.
The Steinbrenner Institute also encourages faculty research in sustainability by hosting periodic events with media to inform faculty about emerging environmental topics, and to provide faculty members with opportunities to engage media representatives about their environmental research.
