The University's Plant Engineering and Planning department employs Life Cycle Cost Analyses when considering the procurement of many new energy and water-using products and systems. These LCCA's are used in the consideration and decisions of purchasing. Moreover, these tactics allow CMU to make comprehensively educated and responsible procurement decisions, while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

Within Plant Engineering design specifications, the general design requirements policy addresses sustainability requirements. Stated within this policy, CMU adheres to LEED certification standards with all Major new projects and renovations.

Responsible Procurement: Environmentally Sensitive Purchasing Decisions
Below is a list of CMU Campus Dining’s sustainable efforts in the category of Responsible Procurement.
Reusable bags are available for purchase in the P.O.D. Market.
Disposable packaging for Meals 2 Go is made with Ingeo (tm) a 100% renewable material made from plants and compostable in municipal and industrial composting facilities.
All Styrofoam products, stored in the Residential Restaurants in the event of a dish machine malfunction, have been eliminated and replaced with paper products, and products manufactured from plants and modified with starch www.pactiv.com/products. Retail locations and the Catering department are also using similar products and have reduced the use of plastic and foam.
Office Paper purchased for printers and copiers is 30% post-consumer content, and vegetable ink is used wherever possible.
Other paper products, such as toilet tissue, facial tissue, paper towels and napkins are produced from 100% recycled materials www.gfs.com/en/products-our-brands/array.page.
Recycled toners and printer cartridges are used in all Campus Dining Office areas.

CMU has a green cleaning policy that specifies the responsible use of paper products in all restrooms, campus wide. CMU tracks green paper products vs. non-green paper products to ensure that the specified target of 90% of all paper products purchased for custodial and restroom purposes is a green product.
