CSU follows LEED principles for construction and demolition waste management. Contractors are required to develop and implement a construction waste management plan to recycle and/or salvage nonhazardous construction and demolition debris.

Additionally, design guidelines from the Office of the University Architect outline specifications for the management of construction waste.

CONSTRUCTION WASTE MANAGEMENT AND DISPOSAL
017419.1 The University seeks to maximize the diversion of construction and demolition waste away from landfills and incinerators.  Where possible, waste materials are to be reused on site, salvaged, or recycled, to meet or exceed the goal of a 75% construction/demolition waste diversion rate.
