Forestry-Based Carbon Offsets

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

Since 2012, we have had faculty visit the site and conduct social and environmental assessments. We are preparing for a study abroad program which will introduce students to the region as part of our formal curriculum. Additionally, we have created a framework for Colgate affiliates (alumni, students and employees on personal travel, etc.) to contribute to the Colgate Forest by investing in tree planting. Here is a link to our new webpage: http://www.patagoniasurco2.com/colgate/.

Patagonia Sur background:
In FY 2012, Colgate entered into an agreement with Patagonia Sur for the purchase of 5,000 tons of offsets per year for 15 years. The project is a reforestation project in The Patagonia Sur Nature Reserve in the Palena province of southern Chile. Over the course of 15 years, approximately 225,000 native trees will be planted on roughly 428 acres of land which will become the Colgate University Forest. The Patagonia Sur reforestation project has acquired Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certification. Importantly, the agreement creates academic opportunities for students and faculty to conduct research within the Colgate Forest and The Patagonia Sur Nature Reserve in general. We are part of the University Conservation Circle (UC2) which is comprised of twelve colleges and universities from around the world that have a demonstrated awareness and distinction in the field of sustainability.
