Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Campus Farm and Apiary

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

CLC has been expanding its food production on the Campus Farm. With the hiring of our new food service company over the past year, we have increasingly offered food items in our cafe that were grown on campus. The chef is able to flex the menu to offer food items that are available and in season. The local foods coordinator is able to grow items specifically to be included in the cafe. CLC has developed a logo that can be used in the cafe to signify that ingredients are grown on campus. Horticulture students are involved from the sustainable agriculture and agricultural marketing classes. The campus farm is managed using integrated pest management and organic methods.

CLC has hosted bee hives for a number of years, but last year a student took on an independent study practicum that expanded the bee hives to an apiary with eight different hives, including langstroth, top-bar, and log hives. Honey from the apiary is sold in the college's cafe and bookstore. Presentations taking place each semester draw large numbers of students interested in the fate of our pollinators.
