A brief description of how the employee educators are selected (1st program):

CSU has a dedicated Campus Energy Coordinator. It is their job to develop engagement (outreach and education) programs targeting faculty and staff to encourage/enable energy, water, and resource conservation at CSU. They are a resource to the entire campus for energy/resource conservation and other sustainability practices.


A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive (1st program):

The first “pilot” program was in Facilities Services North – and it was called the Faces of Conservation – the Coordinator asked each Facilities employee to take a pledge to be one of the Faces of Conservation. Many of the later buildings that joined in energy challenges used the title Faces of Conservation. Others simply called it an energy challenge, and two buildings that competed against each other had an Energy Conservation Smack-down. The flexibility of the program allowed each building to enter into it in a manner that fits the culture of their building and/or department(s).

• During FY13 the Coordinator implemented various building energy challenges. The focus of these challenges have been on reducing electricity (electricity is our single largest contributor to GHG emissions – reducing electricity consumption will help us reduce our emissions) – these will continue in FY14 (so, these are ongoing and people can join in at any point in time).

o Some buildings asked occupants to take a pledge to reduce energy use (or other types of sustainability related actions)

o In every building the Coordinator worked with, the building Proctor would distribute monthly email updates / encouragement / tips / etc that I provided

• The Coordinator is also responsible for training sessions at:
o University Employee Orientation (the UEO = new employee orientation)
o Facilities Management – new employee orientation (here I also teach about what single stream recycling is at CSU)
o Tier 3 Building Proctor Training (our building Proctors go through 4 tiers of training)
o At departmental staff meetings, including lunch-n-learn programs, upon request
o At the annual Professional Development Institute (PDI) – a few days in January where faculty and staff across campus offer short courses to one-another on their area of expertise

• In January 2014 at PDI – the Coordinator will co-present with other faculty, a program called “Become a ‘Certified Conservation Champion’” –a new dedicated peer-to-peer education outreach effort.

Financial support comes through funding for the Coordinator position as well as from Facilities funds.
