Energy Direct Billing

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Cornell’s new budget model, which went into effect FY 2014, makes each college/unit on campus responsible for its own utility bill. This model provides a compelling incentive for colleges and units to reduce their energy consumption and increase cost-saving measures. This new budget model facilitates Cornell's Think Big, Live Green campaign, which aims to reduce campus electric use by 1% from 2012. Early results from the pilot program in the College of Engineering and the College of Human Ecology (CHE) are encouraging: buildings participating in the Fall 2014 Energy Smackdown avoided over 280,000 kWh and $22,000 through engagement and behavior change. CHE buildings achieved an overall 17.1% reduction and participating residence halls achieved an overall 16.2% reduction.
