A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

TREEhouse project

The "TREE" part stands for technology for the responsible use of energy and the environment. This innovative project combines applied research, teaching, and innovative design in the creation of a sustainable working environment. The goal is to produce a research building that will allow modern, “green” building materials to be applied, compared and evaluated, while providing students with the opportunity to gain hands-on understanding in modern building practices, recycled products, and innovative designs.

The project provides opportunities for a range of educational activities: research, interdepartmental collaboration, practical teaching aid, demonstration site and provides information.

A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):

The building benefits from passive solar, recycled insulation, energy efficient lighting, recycled flooring and paint, recycled roofing materials, and exterior siding produced from locally sourced wood products. The house features a composting toilet, able to manage the capacity of 16 people on a daily basis and decreases the volume of waste by 95%, a stand-alone PV solar system, insulation made from recycled pop bottles, and roofing materials made from recycled products like plastics, cellulose fibre, and rubber.

More features will be added to the TREEhouse project and it will remain an interactive learning experience for years to come.
