Facilities Management Grounds Mini-Truck

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

Dalhousie’s Halifax campuses are in downtown thus all vehicles must be road registered so golf carts are not legal to be used as campus vehicles. The Grounds Manager as part of his project for the Employee Sustainability Leadership Certificate Program proposed the idea of a road registered Japanese mini‐truck (6.5 L/100 km) to replace a V8 pick‐up truck (16 L/100 km) to save gas costs and reduce GHG emissions. The mini-truck emissions are similar to a smart car for emissions profile.
Since the project idea was presented, the Japanese mini‐truck has been purchased and is being used successfully on campus with half of the emissions of the original truck. The wheel base also fits on the walk ways not tearing up turf. This idea has grown to include two more mini-trucks for grounds use.
