Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) management program of the Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Office:
The EHS in collaboration with the Facilities Management team receives and responds to complaints and or concerns from the entire Dalhousie Community.
These include;
• Mold
• Asbestos
• Unknown odors
• Chemical smells in the air from construction work or repairs
• Comfort parameters such as temperature and humidity
• Specific workplace contaminates (generally process or research related)
• Radon
• And various general un-described concerns
Asbestos and Radon have the most formal processes in place where these two materials are proactively tested for and remediated as required. Most other IAQ issues are typically compliant driven where anyone within the Dalhousie Community can request IAQ assessment to be performed. This can happen directly through the EHS office or can be raised as a concern at a dept. level, or can be raised as an issue at any of the EHS committees active throughout the University. Often IAQ issues are managed directly through the Facilities Management team as part of renewals or alterations work being performed.
In 2013 the EHS office participated in and led a variety of indoor air quality inspections throughout the University. The EHS office completes / participates in these inspections and issues reports with corrective actions as required. Follow-up occurs to ensure that any deficiencies have been addressed.
