PAE-19: Community Sustainability Partnerships

1)Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM) Partnership and Collaboration with St. Vincent de Paul Parish
a.) DePaul’s Catholic Campus Ministry partners with our on campus food service company, Chartwell’s, and the St. Vincent de Paul Parish to establish a program that allows students to donate the balance of their annual meal plan to the St. Vincent de Paul Parish Food Pantry/Sandwich Window Program. In 2010, St. Vincent de Paul Parish received around$11, 000.00 from this collaboration.

b.) Weddings
CCM has assisted DePaul alumni in the planning, preparation, and celebration of their weddings in
2009/2010. Marriage preparation was done by Fr. Chris Robinson, C.M., Fr. Memo Campuzano, C.M., and Fr.
Pat Harrity, C.M., and Monsignor Ken Velo. Marriage preparation consists of at least two meetings between
each couple and the priest.
CCM students assisted as vocalists/musicians at 9 weddings and as liturgical assistants/servers at 10. Thirtyone
weddings involving current DePaul students, staff, or alumni were performed predominately at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish. In 2009-2010 academic year, two weddings were celebrated in the Miraculous Medal Chapel at DePaul’s Loop
campus.

c.) Baptisms
CCM provides occasional resources and space for the celebration of baptism for the children of DePaul
students, staff, and faculty. 10 baptisms were performed at either the Saint Louise de Marillac Chapel, the
Miraculous Medal Chapel, or Saint Vincent de Paul Parish. The baptisms were performed by Fr. Christopher
Robinson, C.M., Fr. Memo Campuzano, C.M., Fr. Ken Velo, C.M., Fr. Tom Croak, C.M., and Fr. Dennis Holtschneider, C.M.

d.) Deanery Representation
Fr. Christopher Robinson, C.M. represents CCM and University Ministry (UMIN) [in addition to Saint Vincent de Paul Parish] at monthly Archdiocesan deanery meetings. In addition to the meetings of the entire deanery, Fr. Chris also attends monthy sub-deanery meetings which include the pastors of Saint Clement, Saint Josaphat, Saint Teresa, and Saint Michael.

e.) Sheffield Neighborhood Association
Fr. Christopher Robinson, C.M. represents CCM and UMIN [in addition to Saint Vincent de Paul Parish] at
periodic Sheffield Neighborhood Association meetings. This representation is expressed through updates related to CCM students, their contribution to Neighborhood Association events, especially the annual Garden Walk. Students, faculty, and staff from DePaul volunteer to assist at the Garden Walk. Fr. Chris meets regularly with Fran Casey, the DePaul liaison to the Sheffield Neighborhood Association.

2.)DePaul Community Service Association (DCSA):
DCSA is a community of 21 DePaul student-led organizations seeking to promote the dignity of all beings by following the example of St. Vincent de Paul. The function of DCSA is two fold:
To provide meaningful volunteer opportunities to DePaul students who serve our university neighborhood partners in sustained, mutually beneficial relation-ships.
To promote spiritual growth and social justice rooted in Vincentian values. DCSA coordinators strive to dedicate themselves to spiritual growth, service, justice and community building through their work in DCSA.

3.) Service Days
University Ministry organizes two university-wide service days, Vincentian Service Day and New Student Service Day, per academic year.
New Student Service Day (NSSD) is a collaborative program between University Ministry and the Office of New Student & Family Engagement. NSSD invites approximately 1,400 first year DePaul University students to come together with the communities of Chicago for a day of service. After a week of exploring Chicago, this is an exciting opportunity to give back to the city and bring closure to the Discover Chicago Immersion Week along with welcoming Explore & Transfer students to DePaul. Our goal is to strengthen our connections with the communities of Chicago and put our Vincentian mission and values into practice by immersing students into the community service opportunities of Chicago.

Vincentian Service Day is a unique part of the DePaul experience where students, staff, faculty, alumni and community partners come together to serve across Chicago. VSD involves a wide range of DePaul community members in order to build strong "social capital" and visibility around DePaul's Vincentian mission. VSD strives to foster future relationships and service involvement of students, staff, faculty and alumni in the Chicago community.

4.)Archdiocese of Chicago Collaborations
a.) Interfaith Educational Programming - Abrahamic Faith Program with Archdiocese of Chicago:
In 2006, DePaul University Ministry and the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Interreligious and Ecumenical
Affairs (IEA) established an annual public forum in which interfaith leaders and scholars represent the wisdom of
the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian traditions regarding a timely social issue
The topic in 2010 was "On the Economy: Keeping Faithful During an Economic Downturn." Moderated by Sr.
Madge Karecki, SSJ-TOSF, panelists Jane Ramsey of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, Jo-Ellen Karstens of the
Focolare movement, and DePaul's own Muslim Chaplain Abdul-Malik Ryan discussed the theme from a faithbased
perspective. Audience members then engaged in a thoughtful question & answer session.
Over 45 people, ranging from students and staff to interested community members attended the event and
many stayed to converse after the program concluded. The program has gained partners each year -- with this
year's sponsors including the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity and DePaul University Center for
Interreligious Engagement in addition to UMIN and IEA.

b.)The Escuela de Formacion, or ESFOR, was established in the summer of 2005 in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Chicago. University Ministry took over primary leadership at DePaul for this program in the fall of 2007. UMIN’s efforts in this program are led by Fr. Guillermo
Campuzano, CM. The program enables a direct connection and important service to Chicago’s young adult Latino, Catholic community.
The ESFOR program involves 70 Hispanic Young Adult leaders from Chicago in a two-year certificate program
sponsored jointly by the Archdiocese and by DePaul’s Continuing and Professional Education
unit.

c.)Vocation Directors of the Archidocese of Chicago
The Vocation Directors of Religious Communities in and around the Archdiocese of Chicago again participated this year in the Busy Person’s Retreat sponsored by Catholic Campus Ministry. 14 students were accompanied in a one-to-one retreat experience through a week during the Lenten Season as a result of this partnership.

d.) Catholic Relief Services Advocacy Training Program
A one and a half day advocacy training workshop hosted by Catholic Relief Services at Chicago Theological Union, open to all college students in Midwest universities. 12 DePaul students attended and were supported by University Ministry Staff.

5.) Irwin W. Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning:
The Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning provides educational opportunities grounded in Vincentian community values. The center develops mutually beneficial relationships with community organizations to develop a sense of social agency in our students through enrollment in CbSL courses, community internships, and community-based student employment. The Steans Center supports the Catholic Schools Initiative, Jumpstart and Intercambio.

a.) The Catholic Schools Initiative

The Catholic Schools Initiative (CSI) is a mission-related community service employment program that allows DePaul University students to work in selected K - 12 urban Catholic schools to provide tutoring, mentoring, and supplemental enrichment activities. The program aligns strongly with the Steans Center's strategic priorities to engage the city to extend classroom learning, prepare students to be socially responsible future leaders, and to pursue lifelong civic engagement and a concern for the public good.

The program allows students to reflect on what they are learning in the classroom. The class encourages students to consider social problems from a broader perspective and analyze the roots of complex issues.

CSI currently funds 33 DePaul students at eight catholic schools in the Chicago-land area:

San Miguel School in Back of the Yards and at the Gary Comer Campus
Josephinum Academy in Wicker Park
Maternity BVM in Humboldt Park
St. Pius V in Pilsen
St. Agatha in North Lawndale

b.) Jumpstart and DePaul University

A national AmeriCorps program, Jumpstart trains DePaul students to deliver an innovative early education program via yearlong one-on-one relationships with preschool children from low-income households. Participants work with children on language, literacy, and social and initiative skills for a commitment of at least 300 hours during the academic year.

c.) Intercambio
Intercambio integrates a social justice-based curriculum and critical reflection through popular education to raise awareness of social issues while providing students the opportunity to exchange their language and cultural values.

Intercambio is a language acquisition, year-long, community-based service learning program offered at DePaul University through the Department of Modern Languages and the Irwin W. Steans Center for Service-based Learning. DePaul University's Modern Languages Department offers an intermediate level, year long sequence of Spanish classes with a service-learning component. The year-long course sequence is as follows: Spanish 124, Spanish 125, and Spanish 126. Through the service-learning component, DePaul students fulfill the Junior Year Experiential Learning requirement (JYEL), which provides DePaul students the opportunity to draw connections between the course content and students' experiences within the community.

Intercambio is a unique program because it offers an opportunity for English and Spanish-speakers to practice their conversation skills, learn about different cultures and discuss issues affecting society. Intercambio works by partnering a DePaul student (English speaker) with a community member enrolled in English as a Second Language class (Spanish-speaker). Thus, Intercambio is an informal space outside of a classroom which allows participants to practice what they learned in their respective language classes.

During each quarter, the service learning component consists of eight, three-hour sessions in a community-based organization serving the Latino community of Chicago. The Steans Center developed a partnership with several community-based organizations throughout Chicago and these provide space, community members, and support. Each quarter topics change and try to build on each other. Intercambio participants explore such topics as multiculturalism, travel, health, and the environment with students of ESL by participating in structured activities and lively conversation.

d.) The Steans Center also provides a variety of scholarship and internship opportunities for students to work with community partners including the Community Partners Internship, McCormick Community Internship, M3C Fellowship, and other service learning programs. Along with the student scholarships and internships, students also have to option to enroll in community-based service learning courses. The programs and courses work with the following community partners to engage in a variety of service types, such as adult literacy, advocacy, youth development, immigration services, environmental sustainability, tutoring, economic development, etc.

The Egan Urban Center;s broad focus is community development through community/university partnerships. Specifically, Egan Urban Center staff teach, do research and evaluations, and initiate programs that impact community development policy and practice.

The Egan Urban Center's mission gives concrete expression to the University's Vincentian commitment by extending opportunities for DePaul to collaborate with the Chicago community to alleviate poverty, promote social justice and address critical urban problems through teaching, service and scholarship.
