A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:

During the Earlham College New Student Orientation (NSO) the newly formed sustainability committee worked on numerous fun activities throughout the week. With a staff of 10 we hosted a Richmond bike route. This route was open to all students and toured local foods stores, parks and other recreational locations in Richmond. We also had students in the dining hall helping other students sort their compost from regular trash. Another group was in the dorms working with students on locating recycling receptacles and educating them on what can/cannot be recycled. There was also a resource board that was strategically located in the student center that encouraged ride-sharing, freecycle, bus routes and other helpful information. Finally the entire staff took part in a waste demonstration project. We gathered trash from one or two buildings and compiled it on the Heart where we sorted it, weighed it and recycled all materials possibles. There were games and other activities to draw in students to the event.
