2017 Sustainability Symposium
Sustainability has emerged as a primary concern for many sectors, including academic institutions and industries around the world. The 2017 Sustainability Symposium will engage community individuals, university faculty and staff, industry, and agencies interested in Sustainability, with a primary focus on Agriculture and Food Sustainability (food, water, and energy). This symposium will present thought-provoking examples of sustainability ideas, analyses and practices. The event will promote approaches that adopt/implement inclusive views of the key dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic and social) to address present and future needs. The goal of the event is to catalyze and stimulate discussion on how sustainability can be integrated into research and industry practices, especially those that will benefit eastern North Carolina.

African American Health: Understanding Their Health Issues I
Have you ever wondered why African Americans still have the lowest life expectancy and more health problems than a majority of other ethnic and health disparity groups in the United States? This module will not only answer these questions but it will also introduce you and walk you through the following issues such as: (a) Uncovering the early history of public health and medical issues associated with African Americans; (b) Discovering the relationship between African American cultural values, beliefs and patterns with their health status and outcomes; (c) Investigating the top ten causes of mortality and morbidity among African Americans from a comprehensive, holistic perspective; and (d) Developing culturally competent prevention strategies for specific African American populations in the United States. If you are interested in any of theses topics, then this module is for you.
Topics in this module include an Introduction to African American health, medical anthropology and African American health, African American culture and health outcomes, and strategies of applied medical anthropological public health research.

Founded in 2003, the University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute (UNC CSI) is an inter-university marine science research and education institute located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Ethnic Health & Health Disparities: Understanding Health Issues in America I
Have you ever wondered why it is hard to understand how various ethnic and health disparity groups have a difficult time getting the care that they want and need in America? This module will not only answer this question but it will also introduce you and walk you through the following issues such as: (a) Discovering the relationship between culture and health; (b) Uncovering the origins and theories for the causes of ethnic and health disparities; (c) Investigating geographic variation of ethnic and health disparities data; (d) Examining the cultural health issues associated with ethnic groups such as Hispanic/Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indian and Alaska Natives; (e) Finding out how cultural competency strategies really work in clinic and public health settings; and (f) Developing strategies to eliminate ethnic health and health disparity problems. If you are interested in any of these topics, then this module is for you.
Topics include introduction and overview of the course, culture and health, a background to health disparity research, the effects of groupings and categories, and strategies for ethnic health and health disparities research.
