A brief description of the institution’s participation in federal TRIO programs:

East Tennessee State University participates in the Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) which are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. On the ETSU campus TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic process from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. ETSU has eight federal TRIO programs. ETSU has three Upward Bound programs that serve 189 students from 14 area high schools. The Educational Talent Search program serves 600 students from nine middle schools and seven high schools. The Educational Opportunity Center serves 1,000 adults in a seven county target area. The Veterans Upward Bound program serves 120 veterans in a nine county target area.

Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement program encourages low-income and minority undergraduates to consider careers in college teaching and research.

The Office of Equity and Diversity provides a Diversity Incentive Scholarship for underrepresented groups and one criterion for eligibility is financial need.

DISCOVER ETSU and the Language Culture Resource Center were not specifically developed to target students of low-income backgrounds; however, it is in the nature of these student programs that students of low-income backgrounds will be attracted to them.


A brief description of the institution’s other admissions policies and programs:

The Office of Equity and Diversity sponsors a recruitment program called DISCOVER ETSU, a program which invites 11th and 12th grade High School students, from historically underrepresented groups, onto campus for the weekend of the Fall and Spring Open Houses. The participants are given a tour of our campus and are introduced to Faculty and Staff members from several departments across campus. Participants hear formal presentations from the ETSU Staff from admissions, financial aid, housing, campus life and scholarship. The DISCOVER ETSU program is free of charge to the students and their parents.

The Language Culture Resource Center was established to increase the awareness and understanding of diversity and to involve the university faculty and students in hands-on, community-based learning experiences. It functions to bring together people from every age and background, to share our cultural strengths and our humanity as we work toward the acculturation of the local Hispanic communities.
