A brief description of the assessment(s):

The ETSU Commission for Women Standing Committee investigated the status of women on campus, both faculty and staff, and out of this survey came recommendations that were presented to the President's Council. They were accepted and the committee has proceeded with fulfilling them. They include such issues as: safety needs on campus such as better lighting in certain areas, and safety rides to parking lots; tenure process issues for women; expanding the scope of the Women's Resource Center; training issues; mentoring programs; work environment issues and child care needs. These recommendations have been revisited yearly since proposed. The Race Relations Standing Committee monitors the race relations climate on campus and makes recommendations for improvement through special activities/program recommendations and to provide support as appropriate. The Office of Equity and Diversity hired a consultant to access diversity needs on campus.

A brief description of how the results of the assessment(s) are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:

The Office of Equity and Diversity and the President's Council of Cultural Diversity continues to look at infusing diversity into the curriculum. In the development of the ETSU 1000 course for freshmen a large component of time is spent on diversity. The office and committee has initiated the bringing of nationally known speakers onto campus, such as Maya Angelou and Tim Wise. During their visit student, faculty and guest interactions were facilitated.
