Recyclemania / Outreach Campaign

A brief description of the campaign(s):

Recyclemania:
EICCD participated in Recyclemania for the first time in 2009, as one of 207 schools entered in the benchmarking division, and chose to focus on two aspects of the competition: reducing the quantity of trash we produce, and increasing the quantity of office paper we recycle. Participation was limited to our three main campus sites, and our efforts reculted in an upper-third ranking in the Paper Recyclign category, and a middle of the pack rating in overall waste minimization.

Outreach Campaign:
EICCD has implemented three student outreach campaigns aimed at increasing student awareness and practices of sustainability. Our campus bookstores place student purchases in re-usable cloth bags, and offer an incentive for bring the bag back for re-use. Credit students at the SCC campus are provided with flash drives to limit the amount of printing necessary with coursework. And the SCC cafeteria offers a re-usable mug discount for drinks.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):

Recyclemania:
In the Paper Recycling division, EICCD went from recycling 0.14 lb/person during week 1 of the competition, to recycling 0.84 lb/person by the final week of the competition. For the Waste Minimization division, EICCD waste generation rate varied from 6.14 to 7.17 lb/person over the 10 week period of the competition.

Outreach Campaigns:
Although labeled a success by campus administrators, no data is currently available on reduction of plastic bag usage at the bookstores as a result of the re-usable bags, reduction in student printing in the library and computer labs as a result of the flash drive give-away, or the number of students that take advantage of the re-usable mug discount.
