The State of Iowa mandates stormwater protection for construction activities that disturb more than one acre of ground, and EICCD requires compliance with these regulations for all contractors involved in EICCD new construction projects. Measures taken to manage stormwater during new construction include silt fences, drain filters, and regular inspections/cleanups/cleanouts. For all new construction, EICCD had to file a site plan and SWPP plan which included detention basins, and also get permits from cities to connect to their storm water system.
EICCD utilizes several strategies to mitigate the impact of stormwater runoff in ongoing operations. Several of our locations have stormwater detention ponds and vegetated bio-swales to slow the rate of runoff. Grassy areas are also maintained to slow runoff and prevent erosion. The Sustainable Grounds Maintenance plan assures proper application of herbicides, pesticides and snow melt chemicals. Maintenance staff regularly check storm sewer grates for blockage, and faciilty parking lots undergo regular sweeping. Garbage dumpsters are kept covered, operational materials are stored indoors, and litter control is practiced.

Bio-swales are in place at both the Scott Community College and Muscatine Comunity College campus. The SCC bio-swale is planted in native prairie species.
