Which of the following best describes the institution’s approach to rainwater management?:
No written policies, plans or guidelines, but green infrastructure and LID practices are used

A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:

The university has put into place a number of stormwater management initiatives in the last five years, two of which were grant funded (National Fish and Wildlife Foundation), and several of which came about in the construction of the three LEED Gold residence halls on campus. Impetuous for these projects has come from faculty doing water quality research with undergraduate student classes in the area and also from the Physical Plant wanting to address erosion concerns and stormwater-related flooding as more impervious parking has been installed on campus. Initiatives include installation of large (2 acre) riparian areas, 15 rain-barrels, a rain-garden, removal of an asphalt parking lot replaced with turf, bioretention beds around three residence halls, and installation of a flow-through planter at the end of a parking lot.

A brief description of the institution’s rainwater management policy, plan, guidelines and/or practices that supports the responses above:

The municipality charges a stormwater utility fee as a way of meeting its nutrient load reductions for federal and state programs surrounding Chesapeake Bay restoration. This gives EMU some ongoing financial incentives to implement stormwater BMPs in order to qualify for credits that exempt the institution from some of the fees.
