A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities (1st program):

The Green Team Student Sustainability Program at Edmonds Community College began in October 2011 with the adoption of a new student self-assessed Sustainability Fee at $0.50/credit. This funding allows the college to hire the Green Team to provide outreach to the campus community about sustainability. The overall mission of the Green Team is to engage and empower students, faculty, and staff to adopt healthy, sustainable practices that benefit our diverse campus, the greater community, and our environment for future generations. We consider sustainability in terms of both environmental and social justice, whereby our actions allow us to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to also meet their needs. There are 5 student members of the Green Team, and currently, each has a different focus area: Waste Streams, Community Garden, Energy Management, Publicity and Marketing, and Sustainability Consultant.

Examples of activities include: planning events for students to get involved such as Campus Food Sustainability Day, Earth Day Fair and Trashion Show, and the Community Garden Work Parties; holding Trash Talking events to help educate students about proper waste disposal in the cafeteria; hosting booths at different campus events to outreach to a wide variety of students; and conduct classroom visits to present to students about sustainability on campus.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Students are selected through an employment hiring process; advertisements go out across campus, students return their application materials, a hiring committee reviews the applications, and interviews are conducted. Final selections are made based on education, experience, application materials, and interview.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Students receive 4 weeks of intensive (30-40 hrs/week) formal training before the beginning of Fall quarter in partnership with the Center for Student Engagement and Leadership's student leadership team. The training covers sustainability focused and general leadership skills. Training sessions include: Sustainability 101, sustainability discussion circles, diversity and cultural competency, social marketing, tours of the local
recycling center, tours of other local campuses, trash sort, event planning, student employment expectations, service-learning experience,
campus tour, and more.

A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

The Green Team is managed by the Center for Service-Learning Program Manager and is advised by two additional staff members: an AmeriCorps Student Engagement Specialist with the Center for Service-Learning, and the Sustainability Researcher and Energy Management Department Chair. The funding comes from the Associated Students of Edmonds Community College who assessed themselves a fee of $0.50/credit towards sustainability. This generates approximately $100,000 annually, and supports the hiring of the Green Team Student Advocates, providing program support, such as supplies and materials, subsidizing composting in the cafeteria, and a grant program, the Campus Green Fund, open for proposals on sustainability-related projects on campus.
