A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

Japanese Gulch Fish Passage

The Learn and Serve Environmental Anthropology Field (LEAF) School, hosted at Edmonds CC for students from both Edmonds and Everett CC, has partnered with the City of Mukilteo and Paine Field Airport to help restore salmon to Japanese Gulch, a Puget Sound tributary previously inaccessible to salmon and the site of an early twentieth century company town for Japanese mill workers. The LEAF School conducted archaeological excavations in two phases of the project, a necessary requirement for the construction, and is conducting post-project fish and wildlife surveys. This partnership successfully brought salmon back for the first time in fifty years to the historic channel of Japanese Gulch within a few weeks of the completion of the restoration work in October of 2012. The Puget Sound Regional Council recognized Edmonds CC, the City of Mukilteo and Paine Field Airport with a 2040 Vision Award for their innovative project fostering sustainable development in the region.
