PAE-8: Support Programs for Underrepresented Groups

The Diversity Student Center is specifically charged with the task of supporting underrepresented students on campus by providing them with the resources they need to succeed in college. They have a textbook rental program for students who can't afford to purchase books, as well as a laptop rental program. They provide students with community resources such as counseling, food banks, lawyers, shelters, etc. The Center also supports underrepresented students by planning and implementing activities, events, workshops, etc. focused on race and ethnicity, LGTBQ, disability awareness, Veteran's awareness, and other cultural diversity subjects. The Program Manager also represented the college at the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in New York in 2012. The Center for Student Engagement and Leadership also provides students with the opportunity to form clubs that represent the interests of different student groups (i.e. Latin American Student Association, Black Student Association, Native American Student Association, etc.). There is also a program/club on campus called the Project Home Association, and their mission is to support a transitional housing program benefiting the homeless or near-homeless students at Edmonds Community College.

The College provides opportunities for faculty and staff to be supported through various support groups. One in particular is called the Queer Coalition, where LGBTQ individuals and allies on faculty and staff come together regularly to gather support. Faculty and staff are also welcome to join any of the clubs that are on campus, and many get involved through the events and activities the clubs host or as advisors to the club. In addition, faculty/staff may join Diversity Council to join in the work of transforming our institution. While there is a set membership for wide representation across campus, any staff/faculty who is interested may join. Faculty may also choose to work with the Committee on Instructional Diversity, a sub-committee of Diversity Council that is interested in instructional diversity, including cultural diversity requirements, faculty diversity, etc.
