RecycleMania Residence Hall Challenge

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

For one week each March, Emerson residence halls and individual floors compete for the highest recycling rate as part of the eight-week RecycleMania competition. The event is publicized by Eco Reps, staff and faculty, and the residence hall association with verbal announcements, printed media and online media.

Residence hall trash and recycling content are weighed daily to ensure accuracy and daily percentages are updated on the Sustainable Emerson Facebook page.
The winning overall residence hall and floor is announced late March. The winning residence hall has the opportunity to work with Dining Hall chefs to design the meal of its dreams to be served at a date and time of its choosing. The winning floor receives a 3-Day pass to Equinox (luxury gym) for each floor member.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The recycling rate for 30% of residence hall floors improved to above the yearly diversion baseline during the 1 week campaign.

Green Room Certification Program

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

The Green Room Certification Program encourages students to adopt a more environmental friendly lifestyle. Certification is awarded to students who meet criteria outlined in the Green Room Certification Program Checklist found online.
The program aims to: Reduce environmental impact, Help Emerson College achieve its goal of being carbon neutral by 2030; and teach students to save money by cutting energy and water use and changing consumption habits.

Certified residents: receive a certificate celebrating their achievement to display on your door once certified; Gain entry into the biannual Green Room Certification Program Raffle to win $50 to a sustainability-related store of your choice; and earn a Chipotle party for their residence hall floor when half or more of the rooms on their floor are certified.

The initiative is promoted during new student orientation, residence hall association orientation, RA welcome for new residents, Eco Rep tabling, and printed flyers.

The floors that have gained certification state that their students are happier and feel more informed about options for environmentally friendly behavior. Students participating in the program report feeling more empowered and acknowledged for choosing green living.

RecycleMania office competition: During on week in February Emerson offices have the chance to compete for the highest rate of recycling. Office trash and recycling content are weighed nightly to ensure accuracy and daily percentages are updated on the Sustainable Emerson Facebook page. Offices may request assistance with signage, bin placement, tips and recycling information. The winning office receives a catered lunch from Whole Foods Market.

The initiative is publicized in an email from the president, during the staff quarterly meeting, on print and social media, and in an email from the sustainability coordinator.
