The Boston Green Ribbon Commission is a group of business, institutional, and civic leaders in Boston working to develop shared strategies for fighting climate change in coordination with the City’s Climate Action Plan.
The Higher Education Working Group represents the unique constituency of large research and residential campuses in Boston and neighboring cities. Colleges and universities have a significant footprint in the City, as well as a particular set of sustainability challenges, including large-scale energy procurement and management, and resiliency planning for diverse communities of tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff. The intellectual capacity of the higher education sector provides a source of expertise, motivation, and collaboration for the other members of the Green Ribbon Commission, City of Boston and its Climate Action Plan.

The HEWG is managed by the Harvard University Office of Sustainability and focuses on the following strategies to help its members share and adopt best practices in climate mitigation and adaptation:
Sharing Best Practices: Develop multiple formats for best practice sharing, including workshops and a limited online clearinghouse.
Leveraging Faculty Expertise and Research: Utilizing faculty expertise and research to inform planning and implementation of climate strategies.
Streamlining Reporting: Explore ways to streamline reporting for consistent analysis and benchmarking.

The Northeast Campus Sustainability Consortium was established in 2004 to advance education and action for sustainable development on university campuses in the northeast and maritime region. Emerson College participates in the consortium, along with numerous other campuses that range from public and private institutions in the city, to rural community colleges, to trade schools.
