The questions included in the sustainability literacy assessment(s) :

The assessment includes 100 multiple choice questions from a question bank. Questions are in equal numbers in the following categories: 1) scientific and quantitative reasoning, 2) physical sciences, 3) biological sciences, and 4) environmental policy and concerns.

Two sample questions:

What is the definition of sustainable development?
a) Protecting the air, land, and water from pollution.
b) Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
c) Political action to develop environmental laws.
d) Development that can make money.

What is the international treaty that protects the ozone layer?
a) Copenhagen Climate Convention Agreement
b) Rio Sustainability Summit Agreement
c) Montreal Protocol
d) Clean Air Act


A brief description of how the assessment(s) were developed:

Developed by faculty in order to assess core principals of student learning. A question bank was developed, so there are multiple questions for each topic and each year random questions are generated in each category.


A brief description of how the assessment(s) were administered:

This assessment was only given to senior students within the Environmental Studies program. The assessment is given at the end of senior year and assessed during the summer a part of the department's assessment of learning outcomes. 2016 was the first year that the assessment was developed.


A brief summary of results from the assessment(s):

The assessment is part of larger assessment of learning outcomes conducted annually. This outcome was added in 2016 and assessed in the summer of 2016. The learning outcome includes "content knowledge" and "core concepts". The student performance was quantitatively evaluated, and discussed by the faculty. As for each learning outcome, the faculty report includes a "reflection and analysis" as well as and changed to the program that are recommended.
