Does the institution make cultural competence trainings and activities available to all students?:
A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
Estrella Mountain Community College's Office of Student Life and Leadership offers leadership training that includes cultural competence. For example, each year the Office of Student Life and Leadership takes students to the Maricopa Community Colleges Fall Leadership Retreat in Prescott, AZ. One of the learning outcomes of this retreat is for students to understand concepts of diversity and inclusiveness. Each summer, students can participate in the LeaderShape Institute, a week-long leadership development program, of which also includes a cultural competency component.
Estrella Mountain Community College students can also apply to attend the Global Student Leadership Retreat, sponsored by the Maricopa Community College District International & Intercultural Education Office. At this retreat, students learn about other cultures, discover intercultural communication strategies, and practice conflict resolution.
In addition to these trainings, students are able to participate in a number of EMCC activities designed to increase cultural competence. For instance, EMCC sponsors activities for Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Heritage Month, Black History Month, International Education, and various speakers and forums throughout the year on diversity. Students can also join one of EMCC’s twenty-five active student organizations, which include socially and culturally themed clubs such as the Asian Pacific Islander Club, Black Student Union, Social Awareness Club, Intersections, Men of Color Association, and Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan.
