A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :

Applied Sustainability MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)

Fanshawe has offered this award-winning, free course three times. This online course is designed to emphasize the practical and personal elements of sustainability, with each of the six modules featuring on-location video interviews with experts on different aspects of sustainability. The module themes focus on water and waste, green homes and neighbourhoods, off-the grid housing, green landscaping, and green building certifications.

Over 1000 students registered. Many of the students commented that the experience was life-changing and/or significantly changed their lifestyle choices in regards to sustainable philosophy and practice.

We were the first college in Ontario, and among the first in North America to run a MOOC. The level of discourse and information presented, in terms of breadth and depth, was not otherwise readily available to students who weren't engaged in academic studies in fields related to sustainability.
