A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:
Part of the LEED construction process addresses stormwater runoff during construction. FIU aims to reduce runoff from construction sites and follows all policies set forth.
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) requires development of EPA Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) for construction projects site area greater than 1 acre. FIU adheres to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). FDEP is responsible for issuing permits and performing compliance and enforcement activities as the NPDES permitting authority in Florida.

FIU is home to the first green roof in South Florida on our Academic Health Center (ACH) 3 Nursing building, our first LEED Silver certified building. FIU also installed the largest green roof in Miami on the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) building which was the first building on campus to achieve a LEED Gold rating.

The new Parkview Housing project installed a porous pavement road that leads through the Housing complex to the FIU Stadium. This building will open in Fall 2013 and will be FIU's first LEED certified housing facility.

FIU has many ponds throughout our Modesto Maidique and Biscayne Bay Campuses which are for stormwater collection and irrigation.

On the northeast and southeast sides of the basketball arena, there are two vegetated swales that successfully collect stormwater.
