A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:

FIU has partnered with Miami-Dade County and Million Trees Miami through the Office of University Sustainability to host the annual Miami Tree Summit which brings together local elected officials, government agencies, industry professionals and non-profit organizations who share the common goal of increasing Miami-Dade’s tree canopy coverage to 30% by the year 2020. The annual event is free and open to the public. The Tree Summit follows a daylong agenda including feature discussions by experts in the fields of landscape architecture, engineering, arboriculture, urban planning and the importance of trees in creating healthier and livable communities. Recently, the summit has also included a resource and job fair for those interested in pursuing careers in these industries.

Other partnerships include the CLEO Institute, City of Miami Beach, Surfrider Foundation, Dream in Green, US Green Building Council Miami Chapter and Citizens for a Better South Florida.
