Students are able to gain valuable experience through the Frostburg Grows Project that involves conversion of unused mined land to an innovative 5-acre greenhouse and shade house complex. FSU also has two organic gardens. One is located adjacent to the Braddock House for community use. The other is located adjacent to the Veterans Center and was installed by ethnobotany undergraduate students.

"Focus Frostburg" is part of Earth week and includes an all day event that has concurrent lecture sessions on sustainability topics. Other activities include a sustainable topic poster contest, "Tree Art", "Relay for Life", book exchange and other related activities.

The University has sponsored sustainability or environmental-themed films (Plastic Paradise) and speakers. Art students create environmental-themed installations in public areas of the campus for Earth Day. An Earth Day poster contest features submissions from students of any major. Focus Frostburg has included planetarium shows featuring environmental themes.

Events organized through the Recreation and Parks Management program includes many regional outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, camping, and whitewater rafting. FSU also offers a major in Adventure Sports Management where Leave No Trace principles are taught.
