A brief description of the mechanisms through which students have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:

All students participate in Student Government Association. SGA represents both on campus and off campus students. In addition, students living on campus participate in the individual hall association, and have an opportunity to participate in the Resident Hall Association.


Is there at least one student representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative student body or organization?:
Yes

A brief description of student representation on the governing body, including how the representatives are selected:

FSU is a part of the University System of Maryland. There is a student representative on the Board of Regents. The student term is one year, and the student could be attending any of the member institutions.

Several task groups do have student representation. The President's Leadership Circle has been an effective way for students to influence decisions for several years. In particular, the President's Leadership Circle as given students opportunities to provide input on strategic planning, campus physical investments and improvements, and development or change of university policies.


Do all staff, regardless of type or status, have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies (through direct participation or the election of representatives)?:
Yes

A brief description of the mechanisms through which all staff have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:

The Faculty Senate is the primary means of faculty participation in governance. At FSU, the Faculty Senate includes full and part time faculty. It also coordinates over 30 working committees with faculty representation on many issues. There is also a staff senate that represents the views of all other staff on the campus. Union members have additional representation through their union local.


Is there at least one non-supervisory staff representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative staff body or organization?:
No

A brief description of non-supervisory staff representation on the governing body, including how the representatives are selected:

There is no staff representation on the USM Regents normally. There may be advisory groups to the USM Chancellor.

The primary vehicle for the staff role is the President's Advisory Council on Institutional Effectiveness. This group is charged with managing the strategic planning process and all other areas noted above. The majority of the members of the group are professional, but non-supervisory staff members.


Do all faculty, regardless of type or status, have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies (through direct participation or the election of representatives)?:
Yes

A brief description of the mechanisms through which all faculty (including adjunct faculty) have an avenue to participate in one or more governance bodies:

At present, there are at least five faculty representatives on the President's Advisory Council on Institutional Effectiveness. Some are selected by the Faculty Senate, and other by virtue of their role in Faculty Governance.


Is there at least one teaching or research faculty representative on the institution’s governing body who was elected by peers or appointed by a representative faculty body or organization?:
No

A brief description of faculty representation on the governing body, including how the representatives are selected:

There is no faculty member on the USM Regents normally. However, the USM has a Council of University System Faculty with representatives from each campus. This statewide group advises the Chancellor, raises issues of concern to faculty, and helps to keep faculty informed of actions of state government and the legislature.

While the Faculty Senate can and does occasionally discuss all of these issues in open session, and through questions to administrators, many of the working committees of the Faculty Senate confront these issues frequently. Most directly, the Faculty Senate's Institutional Priorities and Resources committee reviews new programs, participates in strategic planning, examines budget issues, and related matters.
